A Christmas 'Package' from Tyler

Every once in a while we poke through Tyler's back pack to see if there's a permission slip or something in there that we should know about. Lately, Tyler's been really interested in collections. He has a bakugan collection, a shell collection, and others. I really hope that helps to explain the following picture.

First of all, this is the classic icon of what a drumstick looks like.
Looks delicious, right? We frankly never considered what a drumstick collection might look like, nor did we ever imagine such a collection would appear so...anatomical.
Tyler's in bed right now, but I expect we might have a conversation with our oldest about art and how his latest piece might be interpreted.
Still, art is supposed to evoke emotion--mission accomplished!

Jared's Cell-Phone Catch-up Medley

I discovered some good pictures and a video on my phone that I probably should have shared a long time ago.

Here's a shot of our two biggest punkins taken at the...well, you can see the sign.

This is the friendly, inviting entrance to the daycare that our precious little princess Holly goes to.
...(the mascot for the high school, middle school, and elementary school in Dilley is the wolf, so the daycare expanded on the theme and calls itself 'Li'l Pups.') There's nothing 'Li'l' about this 5-foot tall ravenous wolf head.

Pam came and stayed with us for a few weeks in October, and one night we all went to eat at Joe's Crab Shack on the Riverwalk. Derek decide to flex his mad dance skillz.

Go DJ! It's your birfday!

Cooler Weather = Less Bugs?

14 Nov 2010

We are all SO SICK!!! Teaching school combined with kids at day care equals really sick Coopers. Holly and Derek both barfed in the car this week. Jared barfed in the bathroom who even knows how many times. EVERYONE has diarrhea. Holly and Jared had really high fevers last weekend Tyler is still on his antibiotic for an ear infection. I am coughing out a lung every 30-40 minutes and in Texas it's still allergy season. We are all in pretty good spirits but our family is like Typhoid Mary (less the typhoid) of course.

Soooo......we didn't go to church again today. We did go for 2 hours last week though and we remembered to fast and I bore my testimony so we're not totally inactive.

It was a little cloudy today before lunch so Tyler and I went out to plant the new lettuce, cabbage and broccoli plants that I bought yesterday as well as some old potatoes that I found in the fridge. I don't know if you can just take potatoes out of the fridge and put them in the ground, but that's what I did so we'll see. The days are cooler now, highs in the 70's so I hope that the bugs have died down a little and I will actually get some good vegetables. I planted some green beans in August that did really well. I got a couple of pounds of beans out of a 4 x 4 foot box.

Here are my lettuce and broccoli plants. The big tomato plant actually planted itself there. One of the cherry tomatos fell off a plant that I had there during the summer and sprouted. Then it survived the attack of the spider mites and virus toting leaf hoppers (without any help from me) and is growing like crazy. We are going to have some super yummy salads in a month if everything goes well. Which I'm sure it won't...

This is my herb garden. The giant plants are basil and some sort of flowering thing that takes 265 days to bloom. It's getting kind of big and I'm not sure I'm going to keep it - not there at least. I have oregano, chives, green onions, parsley, cilantro, mexican oregano, sage and thyme. The green onions are plants that I bought at the grocery store too.

Who Let The Ghosts Out on Halloween Night?

31 Oct 2010
Halloween was really fun for the kids this year. A week ago, we all went to the ward Halloween party where they got to run around in the gym, eat cupcakes, eat gummy worms off of strings and get candy from the trunk-or-treat. Tonight they all got dressed up and went out to the neighbors begging for candy. I stayed home with Ralphie to hand candy out to all the other kids. It was fun to be at home. I just left the door open and put up a baby gate to keep Ralphie in. I could hear all the kids out at the street who were afraid to come to our house because our decoration was so scary. Lots of the neighbors complimented me on how good it looked.

I actually have a better picture where everyone is smiling and looking at the camera but it's blurry. Oh well, you just can't win when you're taking pictures of kids who are waiting to get candy.
A-dore-a-ble!!!!!!
I love my purple bumble fairy so much! The first time I put this costume on her she started dancing and jumping and making "whooshing" sounds. I think she was trying to fly.

Derek got 3 or 4 of these worms cause he kept using his hands. I didn't stop him cause I needed to take pictures ;)
Tyler isn't sad in this picture. He's trying to be creepy.
Same with this one.
Again: candy excitement = blurry pumpkin bucket.

Um...what?

6 Nov 2010
So we were on our way home from the store when Jared came up with this quote. Brace yourself, it's pretty awesome. You might want to sit down...
"If you have any more questions about man's work vs. woman's work, just ask me."

Oh no....

29 Oct 2010

Here's a funny dialog that I just made up and that has no basis whatsoever in reality:

Teacher: Student A, how many did you get right on the quiz?

Student A: What?

Teacher: How many did you get right?

Student A: Oh, um, I missed 2.

Teacher: Yeah, but how many did you get right, out of 5?

Student A: Oh, um, 3?

Teacher: Okay 3. Student B, how many did you get right?

Student B: 100.

Teacher: A 100? But there were only 5 possible on the quiz. How many did you get right out of 5?

Student B: Oh sorry - 5.

Teacher: Thanks. Okay. Student C, how many did you get right?

Student C: Miss, am I passing your class?

Teacher: I'll look that up in a minute. How many did you get right on your quiz?

Student C: I got 2 right. Is that passing?

Teacher: No.

Student C: What percent is that?

Teacher: You should know that. It's 40%. All you have to do is divide 2 by 5. Remember, we did that last week.

Student C: I don't get that. I don't know how to divide 2 by 5.

Teacher [dryly]: That's why you only got a 2 out of 5.

Student C: Can I go to the bathroom?

That's the end. The teacher's head exploded.

Jack-O-Lanterns

18 Oct 2010

I give up on trying to get both boys to smile AND look at the camera at the same time. This is the best I could do.

That's me and the boys carving pumpkins in the background. The big bubble-bowl in the foreground is part of Jared's Halloween Dry Ice Science Lab extravaganza.
This is Tyler's pumpkin. He wants to make sure that everyone knows that it just had a lobotomy (he recently learned that word from Calvin and Hobbes).
This is Derek's pumpkin. It's a happy vampy. The night shots.
Pump-kin bar-mitzvah, spooky scary.

2010 Pumpkin Patch

15 Oct 2010
Last Saturday we decided to partake in some family fun and make a trip to the local pumpkin patch. Since our car only has 5 seats and we all agreed that the kids should be buckled in, Grandma insisted that she be the one to ride in the hatch-back cargo area. It wasn't big enough for her, but she didn't complain...much. It also turned out that the local pumpkin patch was exceptionally UN-local. It took us about an hour and a half to get there. Grandma's knees have yet to fully recover. Anyway, we got there in one piece and in fairly good spirits.
Our first activity was scarecrow building. We were supposed to stuff the clothes with the hay. Derek pulled out one handful, got poked with a sticker, and then left the rest of the job to me and Jared.
Grandma and Tyler were on the other end setting the scarecrow up on the stand.
Tyler was adamant that our scarecrow have a head so we made one out of a t-shirt. Grandma made his eyes out of balls of weeds from the grass. Tyler was so proud.
A scenic pond.
The pumpkin patch was actually not a pumpkin patch at all. They had lots of pumpkins there but they were all just shipped in and piled up on the lawn. The farm was actually an apple orchard. They grow cute little sweet Texas apples and sell them to HEB stores. We got some at the HEB later in the week and they were really really good. They are super fresh and don't have any preservatives so you have to keep them in the fridge, but it's worth it.
Here is part of a tour where the orchard owner (in the background) is showing us how they sort and grade the apples.
(Derek got that football hat from a lady that grabbed it in a claw machine arcade game at the Walmart. Tyler was really jealous.)
At the petting zoo we saw all kinds of farm animals. Tyler got to hold the new baby chick - it was only a week old.
Holly cornered an old turkey and poked it a lot.
Derek and Holly were super excited to go into this tee-pee. Tyler saw it and said, "It's probably just big and empty inside." This is him telling me that he was right.
Here is Holly.
Taking a break on the pumpkin stairs after Grandma got a little tipsy on 'Pumpkin Juice.'
The hay maze. Um...it wasn't really a maze. It was more like a hay corral with hay obstacles. Tyler walked in the entrance and out the exit in about 10 seconds. Derek ran around inside for at least 15 minutes pretending that he couldn't figure out where to go.
Yay for family fun!!

Haunted Cooper House

11 Oct 2010
Every year we like to get a couple new Halloween decorations. When I was a kid the paper cut out Halloween decorations that we put on the front window were almost as (if not more) exciting than the Christmas tree. So, I like to make a big deal of the decorations. We've got almost everything hung up inside (photos to come) and pumpkins from the Pumpkin Patch ready to carve (more photos to come) but we didn't really have anything on the outside of the house. I thought that the little alcove on our second floor would make a perfect haunted skeleton perch so I hijacked the car on the way home from work today and took Jared to the Spirit of Halloween store. We pooled all of our Halloween budget and came up with this. We thought it looked pretty good.
Later on it turned into this. We were suprised at how terribly scary it is. Um....oh well. The deed is done and we already took the ladder back to the neighbor. Hee hee. I love this time of year!

Chumps Who Pay For Their Kids To Take Rides At The Mall

28 Sep 2010
Somehow in my mind the guilt I feel for leaving my kids and going to work for 12 hours a day is mitigated by buying things for them. On some level I know it's shallow but when we're all at the mall so that we can finally use our GAP gift cards and Derek sees a train ride, it's just so so hard for me to say no. See how happy he is?!? It's just so cute.

Then, further down, when Tyler sees the trampoline rubberband thing, it's hard to tell him no when I just let Derek ride the train. He wanted to do it at first, then he got scared and then he really liked it. Actually, I think it looked kind of fun.

The Four-Winged Dinosaur

23 Sep 2010

I was looking for good stuff to watch on Hulu.com and I found a NOVA special called "The Four-Winged Dinosaur" (or something like that) and I put it on. Derek was instantly mezmerized and watched the whole entire hour-long show just like this. What a cutie.

My Cutie Kids

21 Sep 2010

A few weeks ago we went to this giant craft/furniture/decorating store called Garden Ridge. It was a crazy warehouse full of great stuff. These chairs were the kids' favorite items...well, maybe not Tyler. But Holly and Derek were sold. I love their faces in this picture. I also love how Holly and Derek are pretty much the same size.

Welcome Baby Elinor

19 Sep 2010

Joseph and Amanda have a new baby! She was born yesterday, Sep 18th (which BTW is Rebecca's birthday - Happy Birthday Rebecca!) They called and told us that her name is Elinor. She weighs 8 1/2 pounds and Joseph says that she looks a little Japanese. Oh, how cute!
Congratulations you guys. We can't wait to meet her!

Friday, September 17, 2010

Hey! Welcome Back Me!

17 Sep 2010
Thank you everyone for all the Happy Birthday cards, presents and phone calls! You guys are the best!

Where have I been?!? Oh yeah, at my job that's an hour and a half away from my house. That three hour commute really cuts into my blogging time. Not to mention the 4 different classes that I have to prep for each day. How did I end up with 4 different classes and Jared only has one. I teach Math 7, Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, and Math Applications. Jared just has 6th grade Science. Hmmm.....
So Derek is actually still sick. After the barfing, the whole family got colds. We had sore throats, sneezing, runny noses and coughing. Everyone is mostly better except for Derek. He won't stop coughing. I stayed home today to enforce a strict medication and TV watching schedule to see if we can get it cleared up by Monday. Luckily it doesn't seem like pneumonia, at least not yet.
Holly is cuter than ever! She says 'thank you', 'k', 'poop', 'blanket', 'cheese', 'more', 'ralphie', 'mommy', 'daddy', and 'waaaaaaaaaa'. Right now she is polishing off a big bowl of macaroni and cheese with a spoon! What a big girl.
Tyler LOVES his after school program. He finally has a group of boys his own age to play with on a regular basis. They have homework time, structured group games and free time. He takes his Pokemon cards and Bakugan balls to school each day to use during free time. Thanks to the bargaining skills he's learned while playing Monopoly with me, he sometimes makes fantastic trades ;)
Jared went to a training meeting last Saturday and they showed him the SNL clip below. I think that it would have been funny to me before I became a teacher but now I think it's hilarious...and a little sad.

Derek and Holly Are Sick

27 Aug 2010

My babysitter, Sara, is such an angel. Derek threw up 4 times at her house today and she wasn't upset at all (even though she's almost 5 months pregnant!). Derek is still sick. Holly threw up in her bed last night and then just went back to sleep. There was a little pile of not-chewed-up spaghetti noodles in the corner of her bed this morning. Eww.
Well, it's 9:00, I think I'm going to bed. I've got a training meeting tomorrow (Sat) and I've got to be in Dilly by 8:30. My one day off - man! At least Jared can go to the training on a different day so we don't need a babysitter.

Big Mistake

26 Aug 2010

After the first day of school I thought that maybe becoming a middle school teacher was a big mistake. But now that I've remembered how to use my "teacher" voice, everything is all better.

Don't Give Up On Me

25 Aug 2010

Don't give up on me. I know I haven't done a new post in a long time but it's because I'm really super busy. Jared and I have been gone for 12 hours each day. School is going fine. We have lots of great kids and a few that need "extra love". I'm glad that we decided to be teachers. I will make a new post soon. Love you all, Suzie.

A Little Holly On The Beach

Here is a video I took of Holly on the beach. I couldn't get one of her in the waves because I need both hands to catch her and my camera isn't waterproof :P Enjoy!

Arrrr! Avast Ye Salty Sea Baby

14 Aug 2010

Today we went to the beach!!! We never really got a summer vacation what with all the Air Force and teaching jobs stress so we hurried down to the Malaquite Beach on the South Padre Island National Seashore this morning. It was a perfect day to go to the beach. The weather was beautiful, the water was really really warm, the rangers weren't charging any admission to the park for some reason, I only got attacked by two tar balls and the visitor's center has free showers.

As it turns out, Holly LUVA-LUV-LOVES the beach. As soon as we got there she ran out into the waves and wouldn't come back. She would just keep going deeper and deeper and laughing her head off when a wave knocked her down. When the waves got to be too much for her to stand up she would crawl. It was all we could do to keep her from just washing out to sea. I dubbed her "The Salty Sea Baby".
Tyler had a really fun time playing in the waves too. Out in the surf, there are series of sandbars that run parallel to the beach. They are under the water but make it possible for people to go way out into the water to play in really big waves (you can see the tiny people in the first picture.) Tyler really wanted to go out there so Jared went with him and he had a really fun time. Derek not so much. He liked staying on the shore and building sand castles.
This is my photo tribute to Josh and Sydney Christiansen.
What a super day!

First Baptist Church

13 Aug 2010

This Friday the 13th turned out to be a really good day. I went to Dilley for my first day of work. I had to get up really early (5:45) but I got there on time and thoroughly enjoyed myself. I was there for the district's new teacher orientation. I met all the other new teachers and the district staff. They are all so nice and friendly and I felt so welcome. The superintendent (who shall hereafter be referred to as the supernintendo) conducted the meetings. I thought it was pretty neat that the district was so small that the supernintendo could be there to meet and talk with us personally. He is super nice, has a PhD in education is a born-and-bread Texan.
I wish I could say more...
The local First Baptist Church invited us to their building for lunch. It was so cool. It was just like a Mormon funeral luncheon except subtract the funeral and add in a drawing for gifts and prizes donated by local businesses. We had a really long blessing on the food and everything (I was the only one folding my arms and bowing my head - I know 'cause I peeked.) I got TONS of loot because Jared wasn't there and they gave me all his stuff to take home. Here is the picture of my stuff. Jared had just as much plus about $100 in gift cards to local fast food places and HEB. Notice the logo on the shopping bag. I wish I could say more...
After lunch we met some more staff and then went out behind the district building to learn how to put out fires with fire extinguishers. The janitor built a BIG fire using two-by-fours and gasoline. Most of the extinguishers he had for us to use worked pretty good. The one I got wouldn't shut off so I put my fire out really really good. I wish I could say more...

Afterward I went to my classroom. It's baby blue, has boards on some of the windows and I couldn't figure out how to turn on the AC (the controller must be in another room). It's a really old building but it'll be just fine. I should have taken a picture but I didn't think to. I'll have to get lots more pictures later.

I'm so excited to come back to work on Mon with Jared and start working on our curriculum. We've only got next week to get ready and then school starts on the 23rd :)

Another New Car

10 Aug 2010

And once again, we found ourselves sitting in a hot car dealership waiting to sign a thousand papers so that we could borrow several thousand dollars so that we could drive to our jobs that we need so that we can pay for our car.
Heh heh. I'm just kidding.
It wasn't that hot.

Anyway, we got a new car yesterday! I did the math (after all, I have passed the content exams for Math 4-8 and Math 8-12 for teachers in the state of Texas) and the payment and the gas for this 2008 Prius hybrid would be about the same as just the gas for our big Ford wagon. So, since our wagon is getting older, we broke down and bought this little beauty. It says it seats 5 - I think it's really more like 4 1/2. But that's okay 'cause Derek is small. We won't have all the extra room for the large objects that we like to haul with us around the city, but that's okay. We'll figure out a way to make it work.

Lovely metallic mint GREEN (Green, get it? Going green. No? Okay) paint. Well whether it's painted green or not, it still gets 50 mpg so don't laugh.

Dash board resembling the bridge of the starship Enterprise. No key here. Just make sure you have the remote with you in your pocket or your purse and push the button that says 'Start.' Don't worry if you don't hear anything actually start. The engine doesn't come on until you push the gas pedal.
Squishy kid land. Poor Derek - I think he might end up relegated to the hump in the middle. Perhaps I can find a way to install Holly's car seat there so that she can keep the boys separated and
minimize in-fighting.

Crickets, Grasshoppers and Frogs

8 Aug 2010
Derek and I were taking a walk and our conversation went like this:

Derek: Mom, are crickets, grasshoppers and frogs all friends?

Me: No. Crickets and grasshoppers are friends but they don't like frogs because frogs eat crickets and grasshoppers.

Derek: Oh well. Who cares.
